Takeaway: Plug-and-play, decent battery life, lightweight and compact.

You’ll receive the battery base and an instruction manual. The unit is made of a black matte plastic and sized to fit the latest generation 3 Echo Dot device. On top is a hold down clip with a cutout to access the button and mic underneath. At the back of the arm are two posts: the right one is for power and the left one is a dummy plug for the AUX port at the back of the Echo Dot. Unfortunately, that means you can’t output the sound to another speaker while in the base, as you normally would.

At the front of the battery base are 4 indicator LEDs and the power button. On the back of the unit is the DC-in port for charging the unit, however, it doesn’t come with a cable or adapter, so you’ll have to use the one that came with your Echo Dot 3. Note that since the 3rd gen Echo Dot uses a barrel style plug instead of microUSB, this battery base is not compatible with previous versions of the Echo Dot. When you plug the battery base in, it will start charging. Each LED represents 25% of battery life of the unit and all four solid lights means the unit is fully charged. To use the base, simply slide the Echo Dot 3 onto the two posts on the back of the arm, lining up the charging port and AUX port. Make sure the unit is fully seated on the posts. You can charge the base while the Echo is installed. The LEDs will flash while charging. With the base turned on, the Echo Dot will power on and connect to your WiFi network. Since I’ve already charged my base for 3.5 hours, I can unplug it to use without the power cable. The LEDs on the front remain on while the base is on and the Dot will actively listening for your wake word.

On top you can see the cutout at the top of the arm allows access to the volume up button and one of the four mics on top. You’ll notice that the alignment isn’t perfectly centered and looks a bit lopsided, however, this doesn’t interfere with functionality. The battery base makes the Echo Dot portable and runs for about 8 hours continuously at 50% volume. Keep in mind runtime can be more or less depending on how often you wake up the unit, the volume level you set, and the strength fo the WiFi signal. To save battery, you can turn the unit off by pressing and holding the power button for 2 seconds.

Overall, this battery base easily and quickly converts your Echo Dot 3 into a portable unit, allowing you to take your Echo Dot into different rooms or even outside, as long as it can still receive your WiFi signal. It’s got a decent battery life and because it can charge with the Echo Dot installed, you can leave your Dot in the base all the time and just unplug it when you need it on the go.
