Takeaway: Decent shield for small studios, easy to setup and use, panels are not vented in back.
When you first receive the unit there are a few pieces to assemble, but it’s pretty straightforward. The shield features 1.75"" thick egg carton foam absorption panels on the front but isn’t vented in the back so you may experience some reflections within the shield itself. The shield includes a standard 3/8” threaded mic mount with 5/8” adapter; the mount arm swivels left/right and the distance from the shield can be adjusted as well. The foam panels when fully opened measure 12.5” tall and 11” in diameter from the center point. The mount weighs just under 9 lbs so if you do use a stand or boom, make sure it can support the weight (needs to be heavy duty). Otherwise, you can set the shield on a table since the feet have foam pads on the bottom to keep the unit from sliding. I wasn't particularly happy with the foam pads on the feet nor the clamps on the mount because they feel thin and flimsy. I would have preferred rubber pads with a stronger adhesive. When using the isolation shield, recorded sound is a bit duller and flatter but clearer, as well, with a lot less background noise. In most cases an isolation shield will improve the sound quality for your recordings, but it really depends on the final sound that you’re looking for. Overall, the shield here does a decent job blocking noise and reducing reverb, though it’s a little on the small side, so there is still some bleeding of noise around the edges of the shield and the noise floor isn’t particularly low, but definitely lower with the shield than without.
