Takeaway: Simple Try On program ships free. Only pay for what you keep.

This is my first time trying Amazon Prime’s, “Try Before You Buy” wardrobe program, an exclusive benefit for Prime members where you can shop for clothing on Amazon and try things on at home for 7 days without paying anything up front. If you try something on and it doesn’t fit right or you don’t like the look or material, just send it back for free. Anything that you keep past 7 days, you’ll pay whatever price the item was when you checked out. I decided to pick a few new things for this winter and ordered a pair of winter boots from Totes, and two full-zip hoodies from Amazon Essentials.

The boots: I ordered the tote’s Men’s Tornado Snow Boot in size 8 and the color brown. I usually wear a Men’s US 7.5 but half sizes weren’t available, so I decided to go up half a size just to be safe. My first impression after wearing them for a bit was that they are a bit stiff. There’s not a lot of flexibility at the upper joint of the foot, so pointing my toes up feels constrained which makes it feel like walking in ski boots. The insulation, however, is pretty good and my feet were warm and cozy. Water resistance-wise they didn't let any water in while standing in an inch of water. After trying them on though, they were definitely too big, so I’m going to send them back. The beauty of Try Before You Buy is I don’t have to wait for a refund since I wasn’t charged for them in the first place.

The first hoodie I ordered was a Gold hooded fleece sweatshirt in size small. I typically wear small or extra-small, but with hoodies I don’t mind if it’s a bit oversize because that adds to the comfy, cozy feeling of the garment and that also gives it a little bit of wiggle room if it shrinks in the wash. This garment has a nice soft cotton feel on the outside. It has a YKK zipper that slides smoothly and easily. Inside is a soft polyester lining that feels soft to the touch similar to fleece but with less nap. It’s pretty thin, but will make for a great extra layer that I can put on and take off as needed.

It has a 3” high elastic waistband that is pretty stretchy, which is also the length of the cuff on the sleeves. This garment is made in Vietnam and can be machine washed in warm water and tumble dried on low or low iron but not dry cleaned as the material is roughly a 60/40 cotton poly blend. It was nearly the perfect length for my torso, without being baggy, and the shoulder seam is only about ½” outside of a tailored fit. For reference I’m 5’4” or roughly 162.5 cm and weigh 125 lbs. The sleeve length is also just about perfect, with the cuff ending just past my palm and wrist. However, if I raise my arms up, it tends to bunch a little in the middle due to the elastic hem. Other than that, I think this is just about the perfect hoodie: soft, comfortable, and well fitted for my body type. I’m not expecting it to shrink a whole lot since its got polyester in the blend and as long as I stick to cold water washing and low heat drying, it shouldn’t be a problem. It'll be a perfect substitute for a light jacket or if I need to throw another layer on indoors.

The second hoodie is the Sherpa Amazon Essentials Hoodie (color: Camel Heather, Size: S). The sweatshirt is nearly identical to the other hoodie but lined with soft, plush polyester fleece. However, the lining doesn’t extend into the sleeves, so the extra insulation will perform more like wearing a vest. The other thing I noticed is that despite both garments being the same size, it was baggier with longer sleeves and torso as well as a lot of extra fabric in the hood. But there is plenty of room for wearing earmuffs or a hat underneath. The fleece was warm and snuggly, and this one is definitely better suited for colder weather as outerwear.

Overall, I’m pretty happy with my Try Before You Buy experience. I’ll be sending back the boots for sure, but I’m glad I got to try on the hoodies without committing to buy them upfront, just like if I were to buy them in store. I like that you can choose up to 6 eligible items per shipment and that this benefit is already included with my Prime membership. Just note that not all sizes, color choices, and clothing items are eligible for this program, but it is and you’re unsure, I highly recommend it.
