Takeaway: Setup in minutes, small, functional trackers with replaceable batteries.
You’ll receive four trackers in blue, purple, pink, and green with matching lanyards, and an illustrated instruction manual showing you how to setup and use the tracking functions. The trackers are small measuring 1.5” in diameter and ¼” thick. They are made of lightweight plastic with a matte finish on top and shiny plastic at the bottom. On the front, just below the logo is a rubber button that you’ll use to activate the device for pairing. This only needs to be done once. Just press and hold the button for 5 seconds until it beeps twice.
To attach the lanyard, feed the fabric loop through the hole at the top of the tag, then insert the pull through the large loop and pull to tighten. You can then attach the tag to anything like a purse, keys, or electronic device with a lanyard loop. The device comes with a disposable CR2032 battery pre-installed that should last around 2 years, depending on usage. When the battery is depleted, you can replace it by opening the tag via the notch at the top, allowing you to use it indefinitely. Carefully pry apart the two halves of the tag and remove the coin cell battery by gently pushing it towards the top. When replacing, make sure the flat positive side is facing up. Ensure the circuit board is fully seated, then snap the top back on. Because the tag can be opened, it is not fully water sealed and while advertised as IP67, I don’t recommend submerging in water for long periods of time and drying it off immediately if it gets wet.
To use the tags, you must have an Apple phone running iOS 14.5 or higher, like this iPhone X. Open Apple’s ‘Find My’ app, which shows you a map of your current location and the locations of any Apple devices that you own. Tap the blue ‘+’ to add a device and here you want to select ‘add other item.’ Since we already activated the green tag earlier, it pops up right away. Tap ‘connect’ and give the tag a name. Then select an Emoji for the tag that will display on the map. Confirm that you want to add the tag to your account to complete setup.
Once added to your account you can see its location on a map, indicated by the Emoji that you chose. You can see its remaining battery life, and play a sound on the tracker to help locate it nearby. Directions will pull up the Maps app with walking or driving directions to the tag’s last known location. Or you can activate lost mode, and add a contact number or email so folks who find your tracker, and hopefully item it’s attached to, and get in touch with you. The caveat is that another device on the
Find My network with an internet connection has to be in range of the tracker to send that update, since all AirTags are essentially useless if they're in an area with no network or no Find My devices nearby.
Overall, these AirTags were super easy to setup and work best when used in areas where there’s likely to be lots of Apple device users and a good network connection.
