Takeaway: Make multiple types of desserts and treats in one compact machine.
You’ll receive the treat maker, two additional sets of hot plates, and an instruction manual with recipe guide. Dash also has a rewards program where you can earn points to redeem for discounts and free products on their website.
The machine is fairly compact measuring 10.5” deep, 8” wide and 3.5” tall. It has a 3 ft long power cable and the exterior is a matte, powder coated off-white color. On top is an indicator LED that lets you know when the plates are pre-heated and ready for your batter. On the left side of the handles are release switches for when you want to swap between the mini muffin, donut, and waffle plates.
My unit came pre-installed with the mini waffle plates and these non-stick griddles are black with seven individual molds for the waffles. The griddle is double-sided so the top and bottom will cook both sides simultaneously. Similarly, the mini muffin plates have the stump of the muffin on the bottom plate and tops of the muffin on the opposite side as do the donut plates. Every plate is marked top or bottom, though it probably only really matters for the muffins. However, these markings help you install them in the correct positions.
To remove the installed plates, press the release switch and the corresponding plate pops up away from the housing and is easily lifted off. Underneath you’ll see the heating elements which have a U-shaped design in order to distribute heat to the entire cooking surface. When installing the plates, press the two tabs at the back into the notches first then press down at the front until it clicks into place. Changing the plates is super quick and this also makes cleanup easy as well.
Be sure to wash the plates prior to first use. The plates are advertised as dishwasher safe, but I prefer washing them by hand to avoid damaging the non-stick coating and discoloring the untreated cast aluminum on the bottom. Ensure they are fully dry before installing them in the machine.
When you plug the unit in, the indicator light on the lid lets you know that the machine is pre-heating and will shut off when the unit has reached the optimal cooking temperature. Note that the unit does not have an on/off switch. The first time you use the machine, you may smell a bit of a chemical odor at the heat burns off manufacturing residues, so I recommend opening a window or ensuring the room is well-ventilated.
The first thing I made in the machine was mini corn muffins and you can choose to grease the mold or not, and I haven’t here. You’ll drop about 1 tablespoon of batter into the bottom of the molds, filling the center one last as it tends to run hotter than the other ones. You may notice steam escaping the sides, and the top plate lifting slightly as your food cooks and this is normal since most batters will expand and rise while cooking.
After a few minutes the mini muffins were fully cooked and I used chopsticks to extract them from their molds. I’d avoid using metal utensils to avoid scratching the non-stick coating. You can see how easily they release from the plates even without the use of any grease or oil. The muffins are not very big, maybe 1.5” inch across and 0.75” tall. They are fully cooked inside though which is great because each batch of 9 only took about 3 minutes, and the recipe on the corn meal canister yielded just under 5 batches. When you’re done cooking, make sure to unplug the machine and I like to leave the machine open to allow the plates to cool faster, though you should be careful because the surfaces will be hot.
The mini donut plates can make seven 2” diameter donuts in about 4 minutes, though you are supposed to flip them halfway through the cooking process to ensure they brown evenly on both sides. With the mini waffles, I found flipping them didn’t help with even browning, and these tended to overflow their molds after the lid was closed. Regardless, the results were good with tasty, crisp on the outside, soft on the inside mini waffles that the kids enjoyed for breakfast.
Unfortunately, by its third use the cover over the LED fell out of my machine and upon close inspection it appears the plastic tabs holding it in are warped, possibly due to melting slightly from the heat as you can see steam escaping from the holes around the light.
Dash’s customer service was helpful and sent out a replacement unit after a few email exchanges. I was surprised though to find that the replacement unit had a different set of plates that came with a certified authentic card noting that if you register your product the warranty period doubles to 2 years instead of the standard 1-year. The difference as you can see, is that the light gray set is shinier as it is a ceramic coating, versus the black Teflon coating. Both units, however, as the same under the hood so just be aware there are two different versions of the machine out there and you should be able to tell which one you’re getting by the color of the plates shown on the box.
Overall, the Dash MultiMaker Treat System allows me to make three different kinds of treats in one machine, saving me counter and storage space. I do wish the extra sets of plates had come with a case or protective sleeve of some sort as you have to be careful not to scratch or chip the non-stick surface coatings, however, they’re super easy to swap and clean since you can take them out of the machine at the press of a button. I am a little disappointed with the durability on the LED cover, but hopefully I won’t experience the same issue on the new unit. That aside, the machine is able to make dozens of mini muffins, donuts, or waffles perfect for parties, breakfast, or a quick snack in under 30 minutes, and it comes with easy-to-follow, tasty recipes.
