In our colder climate of the Mid-east Atlantic, we often need to grow less hardy perennial plants in pots or planters that we can bring indoors during the winter months. However, growing fruiting plants like citrus and figs in planters can be cumbersome to look after in general. Container plants can become quite heavy the larger they are, which is not ideal when you need to move them in and out of the house, garage, or greenhouse throughout the year. Using lighter weight growing medium is typically the solution of choice, however, can lead to the soil drying out quickly without frequent watering. To solve both these problems, we discovered Vego Garden's metal outdoor rolling planters and were delighted to partner with them on this review in exchange for a free sample.

 
Vego Garden offers outdoor planters in a range of different sizes, colors, and shapes to suit your needs. Depending on the size plant you plan to grow in it, you may want a planter that is smaller (20-gallon) or larger (45-gallon) than the 30-gallon covered in this post. I chose the olive green color, though it also comes in modern gray and pearl white. The planter will arrive flat packed in the box, so some assembly is required. However, the included instructions were easy to follow, and it takes only about 15-20 mins to complete. Before assembling, be sure to inspect the wicking cell and reservoir for cracks or damage that may cause it to leak or fail.

 

Handle the stainless steel panels with gloves to avoid injury

When handling the metal side panels during installation, use the included safety gloves to help prevent injuries from any sharp edges. Each of the coated stainless steel panels comes with protective plastic film on both sides, and you’ll need to remove all of it prior to installation. The interior film can be hard to see but pulls off fairly easily. The different assembly hardware is individually packed, however, they are not labeled as to which part is in which bag. The planter comes together pretty easily though, and the only tool you'll need to provide on your own is a Phillips screwdriver.

 
Note that when attaching the wheel casters, ensure that those with locks are placed on opposite ends of the same cross bar, so that each adjacent caster is of the other type. I like that the planter comes with rubber trim for the top metal edge. This not only protects you from injury against contact with any sharp edges or corners, it also protects the edge itself from damage and dents. There’s an overflow drain hole in the water tray, so rest assured that the planter won’t flood if there’s a heavy rain. The wicking tray keeps the soil completely separate from the water reservoir, and the netted pots allow pockets of soil to slowly draw water up into the planter via capillary action, so your soil stays evenly moist.

 

The 30-gallon planter is 22" tall and 24" square

The final assembled dimensions of the planter are 22" tall and approximately 24" square. The interior volume of the planter, which is approximately 14" deep, holds 30 gallons or about 4 cubic feet of soil. The water reservoir stores around 7.5 gallons of water and water will escape the overflow drain when the tray is full, so be sure not to overfill it if using the planter indoors. Self‑watering does not eliminate manual checks, for example, citrus trees prefer well‑aerated fast-draining soil, so remember to monitor moisture levels and allow occasional dry cycles.

 
Closing the fill tube's screened cap keeps bugs, mosquitoes, and other debris from entering the reservoir. It also clips in securely when closed. Your soil mix should contain around 30-50% coconut coir, but avoid peat moss as it holds onto too much moisture. I made my own blend using 50% coir, 20% vermiculite, 20% perlite, and 10% garden soil. Just be sure to pack soil into the planting cones because this is what allows the soil to pull in moisture from the reservoir below. After filling with soil and water, the planter can weigh anywhere from 75 to 200 lbs depending on soil density and saturation, however, the planter glides and spins easily and smoothly on the casters without requiring a lot of force or effort to move it around. Once both wheel locks are engaged, the planter stays firmly in place as well, but be careful if disengaging the locks with your hands that your fingers do not get caught in the hinge.

In addition to using UV‑resistant polypropylene for the plastic components and stainless‑steel hardware, Vego states that its VZ 2.0 metal material used for its metal tree and fruit planters is 100% Non-toxic, USDA‑approved, and tested by the Texas A&M National Corrosion & Materials Reliability Lab. Not only does the specialized layer of Zinc, Aluminum, and 3% Magnesium (Aluzinc) not leech into soil, it's also corrosion resistant to highly alkaline and highly acidic environments, even on cut or raw edges. It has a high albedo capacity to reflect sunlight without being absorbed so that it stays cooler in the sun. It has an exceptionally long lifespan estimated at 20+ years, and it is 100% recyclable. Please note that these are manufacturer claims, and were not independently verified in this review.

 
Overall, the Vego Garden 30-gallon rolling metal planter is great for small to medium sized perennial plants and trees, like citrus and figs. I have a dwarf papaya tree in it that is doing really well. It also is a great showpiece planter for mixed annual displays and large tropical plants like elephant ears. The casters make it super easy to move it around to follow seasonal sunlight, clean your patio, or prepare for cool weather shelter. Vego Garden also has a number of DIY assembly greenhouses that would be perfect for overwintering your frost-sensitive perennials in lieu of a heated garage. Once it's in its new location I can be confident it'll stay put after the wheel locks are engaged, plus the simple-to-read water gauge lets me know when it’s time to refill the reservoir, so the plant stays happy and hydrated even during dry spells. While it is priced at the high-end of premium gardening products, it's long lifespan and ease of use make the case that the investment is worthwhile, as you won't need to replace the planter for many years to come.
